My name is Kara Wheat and started Sweet Wheat Photography and Design in summer of 2011. I graduated in the May of 2012 and was fortunate enough to have an awesome waiting for me. As soon as school was over I started working at Achieve. Achieve is a consulting and marketing company located in the heart of downtown Indianapolis. I am the Creative Associate and work with a bunch of amazing people that so amazing things.
Photography
Ever since I was old enough to receive an allowance I would buy disposable cameras for almost every occasion and would then annoy almost everyone around me by flashing my camera in their face. I was a part of photography club in elementary school and even though I did not understand even the basics of photography I was in love.
It was at Herron where my passion for photography finally started to take off. I saved up and practically starved myself for 5 months to save up for a professional camera. It was worth it!
When I finally got my camera I realized there was so much I did not understand. I decided that I wanted to know as much as possible about the photography business and photography itself so I sent out many emails to local photographers asking if they were in need of an assistant. Luckily Special Touch Photography, Justin Evans Photography, and Tonya Wittig Photography all contacted me saying they would love the free help. With this experience I got work with and for a wide variety of people.
I also attended a seminar held by Adobe that trained beginner photographers (like me) about lighting, exposure, angles, and editing tricks. This information was great but still did not satisfy my eagerness to know more. So I took a class hosted by Robert's to learn everything there is to know about my camera. Till this day I have the schedule of photography classes pinned up by my work desk to remind me to keep taking classes and to keep progressing in my photography skills.
I am not afraid to admit that there is a lot I need to know about photography and I know that someday I will get there. I learn so much through every photo shoot that I find my experience is constantly growing and my willingness and curiosity to try new things won't slow me down.
Design
When I first visited Herron I had to make the choice of choosing between a degree in design or photography. My heart would be broken either way. Eventually, I decided to go with a major in visual communication.
Herron has done such a great job in teaching me everything I need to know to be a successful designer. Thanks to Herron I have designed for places such as Printing Partners, The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and The Salvation Army.
Like I said earlier, I am currently the Creative Associate for Achieve. I design for nonprofits worldwide and love every minute of it!
I also do a lot of volunteer design for The Boone County Humane Society. I wanted to volunteer myself to taking care of animals but since I moved away I found that I can help out just as much through donating my time towards designing for them.
Me
On March 10th 2012 I married my best friend, Adam Wheat. Thus the "Sweet Wheat".
Besides photography and design, I have a huge passion for animals and life in general. Anyone could tell you that I am always busy. I like it that way. I honestly try to make the most of everyday.
